Make your own cheap medicated shampoos

It is getting to be that time of year when dogs and horses will have their first bath of the season. Horse owners will often be faced with getting rid of rain rot as well as cleaning up their hoofed friends. Medicated shampoos are often expensive and don’t last that long if you are washing horses almost everyday to remove mud and fungus.
Here is a cheap way to make your own medicated shampoos for horses and dogs. I use a garden sprayer to put my ingredients in and then use it to wash our horses and dogs.
Here is the recipe for the shampoo:
Iodine bought at the local feed store. You can buy it by the gallon.
Shampoo from the local dollar store.
Mouthwash (optional)
Fill the garden sprayer 1/4 of the way with iodine. Next fill the sprayer to the half way mark with shampoo. Top the mixture up with water, put the lid on and you are ready to wash.
After washing the animal for 3-4 minutes with your cheap medicated shampoo, switch to just regular water and rinse. You can then follow up the shampoo with a conditioner or leave it alone. I find that the medicated shampoo does a great job of conditioning the coat so I rarely use the conditioner after the medicated shampoo treatment.
You can add mouthwash to the mixture as an astringent. The mouthwash will cut through extra oils and fungus and is suggested for the first few washes only. It will also leave the animal smelling great.

I’m not a horsey person, they scare me; but my SIL is. I must pass this neat little trick along to her as a way of saving money.
I’m not sure how to find my way back here to give her the info. Pop over and tell me how to click you into my EC fav. I’m pretty new at this and trying to figure it all out.
Thanks,
Sandy
