Coughing in the older dog
Coughing in us humans is the body’s reaction to ridding the body of an object that is causing blockage in the air passage. If you have asthma the coughing is also the sign of the beginning of an asthma attack.
In the older dog, coughing can be caused by allergic bronchitis, Canine cough complex, heart disease and pulmonary edema, heartworm disease, metastatic lung cancer, pneumonia, a foreign body, tonsillitis, tracheal collapse and tracheobronchitis.
A dog that coughs mainly at night could be an indication of heart disease. Coughing in an older dog should not be ignored as their immune systems are lower than when they were younger. If your dog has a cough that lasts more than a day, then it is best to see the vet for a diagnosis and prompt treatment.
