As predicted, the most popular dog breed in the USA is the Labrador
After the movie Marley and Me was released the Labrador Retriever has shot forward to the most popular dog breed in the USA. I predicted this in my blog post here, Dogs in the Movies.
The Labrador is not a breed of dog for those people that do not have an active lifestyle. The Lab loves to go out and run and swim. They are a hunting dog breed and as such need to have a “job”. If they don’t have something to keep them active they will dig out of backyards, become a chewer of everything in sight and learn to howl. That is exactly what my elderly parents young Lab did when they just let her be a house and yard dog. In order to save the sanity of the dog my husband brought the Lab home to our place where she could run the acreage and pester the horses and finally play with other dogs.
Her self appointed “job” was to keep an eye on the horses when they were taken out to pasture, greet any car coming down our long driveway with a deep long bark and let the cats climb all over her. She passed away at the beginning of the year at the age of 15. She spent an active life with us for the past 9 years.
