Funny pet names for fish

Published by jans under aquarium fish Edit This

After writing the blog post about Naming your dog Google , someone suggested to me I should write another post for pet fish.  I have had many, many fish throughout my lifetime and I could only remember a few of their names. Yes I named our pond goldfish as well as some of the fancier tropical fish I had. One goldfish was a vail tale and when I first got her she was tiny. She grew and grew until she was the size of a tennis ball in our pond. When she swam she would waddle. With her long tail she looked like a heavy ballerina so that was what her name was “Ballerina”.

Here is a list of what might be some interesting names for pet fish:

  • Popeye - for any bulging eye fish
  • Vader - for black fish, this would be a good name for a Siamese fighting fish
  •  Flash - a name for those small fast fish
  • Tank - for the large, slow moving but aggressive fish
  • Splash - for the fish that is always breaking the surface water of their tank or pond

Showing your guppy

Published by jans under aquarium fish Edit This

Did you know that there were organized shows for guppies? I first heard about them a little over 15 years ago when I was breeding fancy guppies for a local pet store. It takes a bit of preparation to set up a show tank. Live plants and the proper lighting is a must to show off your guppies. The guppies you choose to show must be almost identical to each other to form a small school of fish. Of course since the male guppy is the colorful one they are the ones that appear in the shows.

There is a current group of guppy breeders that are trying to develop a strain of guppies where the females are just as colorful as the males. It is only a careful selection process of the breeding stock that will accomplish that feat. It might be hard but not impossible.

Show guppy

If you want to find out more just type in the words “show guppy” into any search engine and you will find a whole new world of pet fish you were not aware of.
