2009, a look back in the animal world

As 2009 draws to a close it marks the end of a traumatic year for the animals. Many pets in the USA found themselves without homes as their owners either abandoned them or took them to animal shelters when they lost their houses or even the home they were renting to foreclosure.

Horses were found abandoned by the score as large animal rescue agencies scrambled to find space for them. Unfortunately many of them ended up in Canadian or Mexican meat packing plants. They were taken there illegally but none the less taken. Someone I knew trailered their horse out to go on a trail ride and came riding back into camp only to find someone had loaded 2 horses inside her trailer and left. Another person I know lives along a state highway that is does not have that much traffic. He awoke one morning to find 4 extra horses in his pasture. Someone had cut his fence and put the horses in the pasture then rewired the fence back together again. In both of those incidences the horses were traced back to their owners and the owners were charged with abandonment which is a hefty fine in our state. The horses were placed by the county in more caring homes.

Wild horses did not fare any better since the BLM continues to mis-manage their charges and still continues to remove horses from wild range land to allow cattle ranchers to buy permits to over graze the land with their cattle.

The Polar Bear population continues to dwindle due to the lack of the northern ice shelf.

Dismal news in the animal world seemed to have a never ending tale of woe. But there was a bright spot in the news for pets. It seems that huge mega pet stores like Petsmart and Petco announced huge profits. Pet owners that had not been affected by the economy were lavishing all sorts of purchased love on their pets.

What will 2010 bring? A new decade and a new beginning, let’s hope a fresh start for the animals as well.
